Jun 04,2022: Local 520 Retirement/Scholarship Celebration

Today was a great day to catch up with many of our 2022 Retirees. Several Retirees & family representatives of the 2021 Scholarship Winner arrived at Jameson’s Pub & enjoyed socializing with old acquaintances.

Photos are available for download in the Members section.

For those who could not make it, your items can be picked up at the Union Hall this Saturday (June 11) during our June RMM & election or will be sent out this upcoming week by registered mail.

This Saturday the current sitting Executive Members will once again gather for our traditional pre-election Last Supper after a 2 year COVID hiatus.

Jun 05,2021: Local 520 Retirement Celebration

Today was a great day to catch up with many of our 2020 & 2021 Retirees. Several Retirees arrived at the Hall, enjoyed socializing with old acquaintances, & partook of food supplied by Calgary’s perennial favourite Italian deli, Spolumbos.

Photos will be gathered this week for distribution upon request.

For those who could not make it, your items will be sent out this upcoming week by registered mail.

We are still seeking the whereabouts of Brother Kevin Williams & are holding his items at the local Office for safekeeping if anyone has contact with him in the near future.

May 28,2021: June 5 Retirement Event

With the ongoing easing of pandemic restrictions, it appears (at this time) that our small retirement ceremony will be able to proceed at the Union Hall on Saturday June 5 from 11am to 1pm. We are planning to serve a Spolumbos lunch rather than a BBQ.

We are looking forward to seeing as many of our 2020 & 2021 Retirees as are comfortable attending & wishing them hearty congratulations in person for their many years of service.

May 06,2021: Congratulations, DR

Another Local 520 Member announced his retirement this week.

After more than 32 years of service with the Local, Drahomir Drapal has decided to begin the next phase of his life on July 31, 2021.

Congratulations from your Brothers & Sisters at Local 520, DR!

Thank you for your many years of service.

Apr 17,2021: Retirees letters

If you are on either list for 2019-20 or 2020-21 Retirees & you have not received a letter from Local 520 by April 24, please contact us. We may not have your current address or phone number, particularly if you moved near or after retirement without notifying the District (from whom we gather your contact info).

We are currently seeking contact info for Brothers Paul Block & Kevin Williams, if any Member has had recent contact with either.

Mar 14:2021: CUPE 520 Retirement Banquet 2021

Sadly, ongoing provincial COVID-19 restrictions have forced the cancellation of our second Retirement Banquet in a row. At the March RMM, the Membership chose a new path for this year, as well as 2020.

As the number of retirees would have likely reached 30 (plus spouses & guests) by next year’s banquet, Local 520 will be sending all retirees from these past 2 years a gift card so that they can celebrate with their significant others, in lieu of the two complimentary banquet tickets they would customarily receive.

For those that retired last year, the cards will be sent out in June by registered mail. Those retiring this school year will receive their cards, watches, & honouraria at the Union Office, also in June. At that time, we will also send the Scholarship Winner her cheque, which is traditionally presented at the banquet.

Of course, all are free to attend any future banquet as paying guests, as is the yearly tradition of many of our past retirees.

It will certainly be a blessing to see everybody together again, once we are able to do so.

Jan 28,2021: 2020-21 Retirees

We are quickly reaching the point where we will need to make a decision on this year’s Annual Retirement Banquet. So far, it is not looking optimistic that we will be allowed to host our usual event. In February the Executive will be discussing the options we have available to honour our retiring Members.

That being said, please notify the Union ASAP of any plans for retiring this school year so that you can be included in whatever celebrations we are able to host.
